CPU Installation

This chapter installs the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D into the AM5 socket on the Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WiFi7 motherboard.

Seat the CPU correctly without bending socket contacts, contaminating the contact pads, or damaging the retention frame.

10-15 minutes.

Moderate because the AM5 socket contacts are delicate.

  • Anti-static wrist strap.
  • Motherboard box or anti-static-safe work surface.
  • Good lighting.
  • CPU packaging.
  • Do not touch the gold pads on the underside of the CPU.
  • Do not touch the pins inside the AM5 socket.
  • Do not force the CPU into the socket.
  • Do not remove the plastic socket cover by hand. Let the retention mechanism release it.
  • Do not apply thermal paste in this chapter. The cooler installation chapter handles paste and pump mounting.
  1. Place the motherboard on top of its box with the socket facing upward.
  2. Release the AM5 socket retention arm.
  3. Lift the retention frame.
  4. Hold the Ryzen 7 7800X3D by its edges.
  5. Find the small alignment triangle on the CPU.
  6. Match the CPU triangle to the triangle marker on the motherboard socket.
  7. Lower the CPU straight into the socket. It should sit flat without pressure.
  8. Lower the retention frame.
  9. Push the retention arm down and lock it under the tab.
  10. Allow the plastic socket cover to pop free from the retention frame.
  11. Keep the socket cover in the motherboard box for warranty or transport use.
  • CPU is oriented with the triangle markers aligned.
  • CPU sits flat in the socket before the retention frame is closed.
  • Retention arm is locked.
  • Socket cover is stored safely.
  • No thermal paste has been applied yet.
  • No socket contacts were touched.
  • Rotating the CPU incorrectly.
  • Pressing on the CPU before it is aligned.
  • Pulling the plastic socket cover off manually.
  • Touching the underside pads.
  • Installing the cooler before RAM and M.2 installation planning is complete.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is locked into the AM5 socket and ready for SSD, memory, and cooler installation.
